National Muslim Mental Health Summit and MCB AGM Bring Together Muslim Leaders and Community Organisations

More than 400 delegates, including community leaders, mental health professionals, academics, volunteers and representatives from Muslim organisations across the United Kingdom, attended the National Muslim Mental Health Summit on Saturday, 18 July 2026, at the University of East London. The Summit reflected a shared commitment to building a future where mental health is better understood, openly discussed, appropriately supported and prioritised within British Muslim communities.

COSMOS UK President Mohamed Shakeer Nawas, together with representatives from several COSMOS UK affiliate organisations, attended the event and actively contributed to the discussions and networking opportunities throughout the day.

The Summit featured inspiring keynote addresses, expert panel discussions and practical workshops focusing on improving mental health awareness, reducing stigma, promoting early intervention and strengthening community support. Delegates exchanged ideas and explored ways in which faith institutions, charities and community organisations can work together to improve access to mental health services and create more compassionate and resilient communities.

The event concluded with the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) Annual General Meeting, where delegates discussed the organisation's future priorities, governance and strategic direction in serving British Muslim communities.

COSMOS UK warmly congratulates Dr Wajid Akthar on his re-election as Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain for a second term and Bro Maswood Ahmed on his re-election as Deputy Secretary General for a second consecutive term.

COSMOS UK is also delighted that Mrs Sameeha Rafeek, a COSMOS UK Executive Committee member, BMS ExCo and former Deputy Chair of the MCB National Council, together with Shakeer Nawas, President of COSMOS UK, will continue to serve as National Council Members of the Muslim Council of Britain, representing COSMOS UK.

In addition,Bro Ansar Mahir, Executive Committee member of the British Muslim Society (BMS/SLIF) and Founder General Secretary of COSMOS UK, was re elected as a National Council Member of the MCB for the second consecutive term. COSMOS UK congratulates all newly elected National Council members and ExCo members of MCB and wishes them every success in guiding the future work of the Muslim Council of Britain.

Reflecting on the day's events, COSMOS UK reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen mental wellbeing, encourage partnership working and promote positive engagement across communities. The organisation looks forward to working closely with the MCB and its partner organisations to advance these important objectives.
